A visit to Smedjebacken is a journey through time where you can witness the beginnings of a modern industrial society. Smedjebacken is located in the region Bergslagen, where for centuries the iron mining was a very important industry.

At the various sites you will find charcoal-burning stacks, mines, smelting houses, pit and blast furnaces, manor houses, homestead villages and many more. Local societies with active volunteers help bring to life many of the Ecomuseum's environments.

The port of Smedjebacken is very popular in the summer. It is the end of the Strömsholms channel, the connection to Stockholm. At the port you will find the old station, and the museum Gamla Meken. The old church street with wooden houses is also worth a visit.

In Älgmark Malingsbo Kloten, people culture and animals meet each other over 1000 years. This big nature reserve is worth a visit. If you want to take it to extremes, Southern Dalarna could be called Stockholm´s outdoor playground, as it is just a two-hour journey from the capital.
